Happy Birthday, Sir John A!

January 10th 2013 by Yves Desjardins-Siciliano

On January 11th Canada celebrates the birthday of one of its most beloved historical figures, former Prime Minister and Father of Confederation, Sir John A Macdonald.

We are planning some amazing things, and are very excited about the next couple of years’ work with the Commission.

This year, though, we thought we’d start the creative juices flowing with some fun facts:

Did you know that:

-Cataraqui Cemetary, the gorgeous cemetery where Sir John A Madonald’s grave can be found, is within walking distance of VIA Rail’s Kingston station?

-Sir John A Macdonald is not the only Prime Minister to celebrate his b-day on January 11? Jean Chrétien’s birthday is also on January 11th.

-One of Canada’s former Prime Ministers would privately visit Sir John A’s grave for inspiration… Mackenzie King, made several trips to the gravesite throughout his 22 years as Prime Minister.

Looking for fun ways to celebrate?  Don’t miss the Macdonald Bicentennial Commission’s Sir John, Eh? The Musical.

You can also hop on a train to Kingston and partake in “In Sir John A.’s Footsteps: A Kingston Walking Tour”, narrated by your choice of Don Cherry, Jean Chretien or Peter Milliken!

Enjoy the day, and make sure to join our Facebook page for more info leading up to the big Bicentennial.
