A Billion Dollars In Investment — Follow VIA Rail’s day to day transformation

August 10th 2012 by Yves Desjardins-Siciliano

Are you familiar with the Transforming VIA web site? It is a microsite on the VIA Rail web site. It is entirely dedicated to the transformations that the company is undergoing as part of its capital investment program. Click here to access the site. You will see photos of our new cars, stations’ refurbishment plans, the latest information on our technologies, etc.

To learn everything there is to know about the microsite, I invite you to take a guided tour by viewing the Transforming VIA User Guide. You will discover a wealth of fascinating information about everything related to our transformation.

Since 2007, the Government of Canada has invested nearly one billion dollars to strengthen passenger train service at VIA Rail. This is the largest capital investment in our history.

These investments result in many projects that primarily affect:

Our trains:

We are refurbishing our rolling stock, locomotives and cars, to provide more accessible, efficient and reliable service. In short, we offer a more comfortable and, of course, a greener trip!

Our stations:

We are improving and modernizing more than 50 of our stations in communities across the country. In some cases, we are building entirely new stations to adapt to current customer needs and operational requirements.

Our tracks:

We are expanding and improving tracks and infrastructure in the Québec City – Ontario corridor, particularly in the Montréal – Ottawa – Toronto triangle, where demand for passenger train service is the greatest.

Our technology:

We are investing in new state-of-the-art technologies to provide better Wi-Fi services, e-tickets, mobile services, etc.
